If you’re a 4×4 enthusiast but don’t get much of a chance to show off your skills, this event’s for you. One of Africa’s most exciting off-roading competitions, the Elephant Charge is an annual motorsport challenge held in Zambia. This year it will be held on the weekend of 23 to 25 October and involves teams of cars and motorbikes competing on a gruelling course through the bush, two hours’ drive from Lusaka. Each team has to find its own arduous route between the checkpoints through valleys, over ridges and up escarpments combining driving, navigating and endurance skills.

The event aims to raise funds and create awareness for conservation in Zambia. This year, organisers hope to net US $35 000 (about R273 000), which will go towards conservation efforts in South Luangwa, Lower Zambezi and Kafue national parks. The final date for entries is 2 October 2010.

For more information on the event or to enter, go to www.elephantcharge.org.
