Looking for grebes or plovers? You can’t go wrong at the new bird hide at Rooisands Nature Reserve on the Overberg Birding Route. The hide has been positioned with great views over the Rooisands Estuary.
The Overberg Birding Route, which stretches between the Hermanus and Bot River lagoons, encompasses diverse ecosystems, giving bird enthusiasts the opportunity of twitching in mountain, coastal, river and estuarine habitats. The region is home to a vast array of birds such as the blue crane, Cape sugarbird, Cape rock-jumper, Cape siskin, Victorin’s warbler, orange-breasted sunbird, black harrier, Cape penguin and African black oystercatcher. The new hide is a great addition to the Overberg Birding Route.
Rooisands Nature Reserve, which borders the Arabella Western Cape Hotel & Spa and is under the hotel’s curatorship from Cape Nature, forms part of the Kogelberg Biosphere, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The construction of the bird hide and walkways are part of the mandate from Cape Nature to create accessibility to the Rooisands Nature Reserve for the surrounding local communities.
The Arabella Western Cape Hotel & Spa is the first accredited bird-friendly luxury hotel to be recognised by BirdLife South Africa.
