The government of the Free State has granted a permit to a farmer allowing him to sell lion bones, which has enraged environmentalists. Lion bones are in demand in Asia and are used in the same way as tiger bones in Chinese medicine.

Conservation groups are concerned that granting this permit will put wild lions under threat. Buti Mathabula of the Free State Department of Tourism, Environmental and Economic Affairs, says lions are not endangered in the Free
State. ‘They are not of any value to us from an environmental point of view. If someone wants to hunt lions [bred for
trophy hunting] in the Free State, that is fine.’

  1. I think this is horrific, should not be allowed. We carry on like this there will be no wildlife left.
We are supposed to conserve not destroy, what will be left for our children’s children?.

  2. One has to ask what happened to the lions whose bones are being sold. Guarantee they did not die of “natural causes”. It is a side reflection of humanity today that an animal has to have a “value” before it is protected. However, given the area that these sales are happening in one should not be surprised. It has a dreadful reputation for animal rights abuse.

  3. The ?Issuing of a permit for a farmer in the Free State to sell lion bones is absolutly disgusting and should not be allowed.

  4. Mr Buti Mathabula needs to learn what tourism really means – the amjority of overseas and local tourists want to see Lion or Leopard when game viewing. The cats are the reason for wildlife tourists coming to any part of Africa – this irresponsible, despicable action and the illogical comments made by Mr Mathabula are exactly what will lead to the accellerated extinction of most of Africa’s cats during the next 50 years. Shame on you!

  5. Bred for trophy hunting? More like canned hunting – whre has this nation’s morality gone?

  6. Hoekom het hy in die eerste plek die permit as hy weet hy kan dit nie behou nie
