The plump moon hangs like a protective eye over a magical stretch of coastline from Maphelane to Kosi Bay, where whales come to flirt and hatching turtles take their first staccato steps to the sea. iSimangaliso encompasses two contigious marine protected areas (MPAs), St Lucia and Maputaland, which project three nautical miles out to sea and join up with Mozambique’s newly formed MPA which extends from the border to Maputo Bay. The result is 300 kilometres of protected coastline linked to a system of interconnected wetland, estaurine and terrestrial ecosystems.
