HOW TO GET THERE
You can fly either Air Botswana to Maun or one of three airlines to Victoria Falls. From there you will have to take a charter flight to either Linyanti or Savute, depending on where your visit starts.
WHAT TO TAKE
This is a malarial area so you should consult your doctor well in advance about medication. You will need protection against the sun year-round, although from about May to August mornings and evenings are cold, and can get very cold.
Obviously there are no shops around so take all your own personal effects (although Eco-co soap, shampoo, sun screen, insect repellent and moisturiser are provided, as well as towels and, at King’s Pool, bath robes).
There is a reference library at King’s Pool, but take your own reading matter, as well as camera, binoculars and field guides if you have a particular interest.
Casual bush clothes are in; although game walks are not conducted, walking shoes or boots are recommended.
SUGGESTED READING
The best coffee-table book on the area is Anthony Bannister and Peter Johnson’s Land of Water, Sea of Land (Struik Publishers, Cape Town).
The best field guide is A Field Guide to the Mammals of Botswana by Peter Comely and Salome Meyer (Africa Window, Kasane).
Newman’s Guide to the Birds of Botswana (Southern Book Publishers, Gauteng) is the standard bird text. There are numerous other Southern African field guides.
